Janet Jackson made a surprising appearance at Sunday's BET Awards 09' ceremony in Los Angeles.

The younger sister of the late Michael Jackson, took the stage toward the end the network's celebration of achievement in music, film, television and sports. Following her father, Joe Jackson, who walked the red carpet speaking of his son, Janet thanked fans and addressed the loss of her brother and King of Pop.

Speaking briefly, Janet told the BET Awards audience: "My entire family wanted to be here tonight but it was just too painful, so they elected me to speak with all of you."  "I'd just like to say to you, Michael is an icon. To us Michael is family. He will forever live in all of our hearts."

Addressing fans, Jackson continued with the words "On behalf of my family and myself, thank you for all of your love. Thank you for all of your support. We miss him so much."

After the brief speech Jackson left the stage with an applause from the audience.

Jackson's appearance was followed by a special tribute performance from comedian/actor/singer Jamie Foxx and Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter Ne-Yo.

The BET Awards 09', featuring performances from Beyonce, The O'Jays and Keri Hilson aired live! from Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium.
