Gotta love this study out of Copenhagen: Thin thighs were associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and coronary heart diseases and total mortality in both men and women.
Don't jump off the treadmill just yet: Researchers say the reason behind the increased risk of disease is related to too little muscle mass. Muscle tissue can influence insulin resistance and other heart risks. So, the point is to have big, strong, muscular thighs -- not big, fluffy cottage cheese thighs. Kinda like that ad above that Nike ran a few years back.
What's the magic number? 23.6 inches around. People whose thighs are larger seem to have a reduced risk of heart disease. But thighs that are larger than that have no added benefit.
The researchers recommend focusing on lower-body workouts to strengthen legs and thighs.
