The Journal of Applied Physiology reports that beet juice can boost endurance in exercisers and keep you in the gym exercising longer.
(OMG, I've been waiting to write that headline all summer!)
Subjects who drank beet juice outperformed a control group in tests and were able to exercise at the same intensity for up to 16 percent longer.
Researchers at the University of Exeter in England aren't sure how the juice works but , like lettuce and spinach, beets are rich in nitrate, which the body converts into nitrite. This triggers another compound, nitric oxide, which provides more oxygen to muscles.
Add that to a recent study in the journal Hypertension, which found that beet juice reduces blood pressure, and hey, who needs Gatorade? Fill your sports bottle with borscht! (Warms the cockles of my Polish heart.)
