If you're looking for a way to get exercise and have fun all in one swoop, look no further than the St. Louis Zoo.  The abundance of inclines alone will make your treadmill at the gym jealous. "But dear treadmill, you just don't understand. At the zoo I actually go somewhere and get to see something! And my legs are just as tired as they would be had I walked with you."

While trudging up the hills and loving the walk back down, you can see an abundance of amazing animals and plant life. The best part about this kind of workout is the fact you don't realize it's exercise. You're having too much fun to take notice. And did I forget to mention it's free? The St. Louis Zoo does not charge visitors one red cent for entry.

At this time of year it tends to get pretty hot during the day, so plan your outing to the zoo early in the morning for the best temperatures and drink plenty of water. (Get there at opening and you'll have one hour of free activities too, such as the new Stingrays at Carribean Cove!) Should you get too hot, a quick visit to the Penguin and Puffin Coast will cool you down in short order. You'll also find air conditioned bliss in many of the other indoor attractions available.

Check out this slide show to see just a few of the many attractions at the zoo!

Kids can cool down in the Childrens Zoo, where they can play in the water area, slide, climb and generally have a ball. (Children's Zoo is $4 per person, kids under 2 free. Or buy the safari pass, which is the best deal.) I highly recommend you bring a change of clothes if you don't want to wait on the kiddos to dry out before leaving. You can also see educational shows on a variety of animals and pet a few furry friends along the way.

Concerned about the food? Never fear. The following restaurants inside the zoo can easily be adapted to the low-carb lifestyle.
  • The Painted Giraffe has a variety of sandwiches. Just grab a fork and eat the innards. They also offer a salad bar, chef salads and fresh fruit.
  • At the River Camp Cafe you can emulate many low-carbers and get a hamburger, sans bun. Or again get a sandwich or salad.
  • In Lakeside Cafe you'll find a variety of cusine to satisfy the whole family. You can choose from Deli, Italian, All American, and between 8 am and 10 am you can even get breakfast.

Not low carb enough for you?  Check out the Insectarium, where everything there screams protein! You'll even find a display showing how some insects are considered a delicacy. Gross, but true.

Be sure to check out the zoo schedule before planning your day. And if you're up for spending a little for the extras the zoo has to offer, I highly recommend the safari pass. You won't regret it.
