Monday marks the 32nd annual International Museum Day, a day created by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) to encourage awareness of the role of museums in the development of society.

To mark the occasion, take your young explorers to one of the north-metro’s best-kept secrets: The World of Wonder (WOW!) Children’s Museum in Lafayette. The WOW Museum is located at 110 N. Harrison Avenue in Lafayette, just southeast of the intersection of Highway 7 and N. Public Road. The central location means a short drive from most north-metro cities, making this museum more easily accessible than downtown Denver museums for northern area families.

The 8,000-square-foot facility includes a wide variety of hands-on educational displays for children ranging in age from 1-11 years old.  Displays include and arts and crafts room, music room, dance stage, theater and dress-up area, wind energy, air and gravity exhibits, dinosaurs, a pirate ship and lighthouse, trains, an interactive grocery store and credit union, sand castle, bubbles, ball maze and a reading area.  The WOW Museum also features different exhibits throughout the year, providing children with a different experience every time they visit.

Admission is reasonable: $7 for children ages 15 months - 11 years.  Adults and babies (14 months of age and under) are free. Annual memberships are also available.

The WOW Museum also offers birthday parties, workshops, and special events throughout the year, many of which are included in the price of regular admission.  Visit the WOW Museum’s website for more information on these special programs.

My experiences with the WOW Museum have always been positive.  Whether I am with babies or older Elementary-age children, the WOW Museum proves to be exciting, educational, and fun for all kids. The staff is always friendly and helpful and the facility is clean and well-kept.

Insider Tip: The WOW Museum does not have a concession stand.  However, there are indoor and outdoor eating areas designed for lunchtime breaks.  Be sure to pack a lunch and plan on spending several hours exploring all the WOW Museum has to offer.
