Republicans, celebrating over having won two gubernatorial elections last night, grateful to have been able to win something after being thrown out of all three branches of the federal government, lost what was probably the most significant election last night -- the 23rd district in New York.

That seat had been held by  Republican for years, but conservatives from outside the state starting with Sarah Palin, meddled, and in the words of one right wing Hoffman supporter, wanted to purge the party of moderates like Dede Scozzafava, the Republican candidate who is pro choice and pro gay rights. They succeeded in forcing her out of the race in favor of Doug Hoffman, a conservative and in the process succeeded in electing the Democrat.

Only two weeks ago a Republican spokesman had said that Hoffman "lacked the integrity and qualities to be elected to anything much less congress" .But after conservatives forced Scozzafava to drop out, the national Republican party found themselves having to support someone they had labeled unfit for office.

The loss will have much larger national implications for  the Republican party than the two wins in New Jersey and Virginia. The New Jersey race was close even though Corzine had become very unpopular and went into the election with a 39% approval rating. And in Virginia the Republican win was expected against a Democratic candidate considered weak.

But the loss of the House seat in a traditionally Republican district has a much greater impact on the Republican party.   How big a defeat was it for conservatives?  Hoffman had the backing of the Wall Street Journal, the Weekly Standard, Sara Palin,  Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. The seat had also been held by Republicans since the 19th century. It was more than a defeat for conservatives, it was a repudiation of their ideas, their values and most of all their tactics.

Conservatives are saying they want to purge the party of moderates like Scozzafava and many are now saying that as long as Scozzafava lost  they consider it a victory. Which is going to cause a major rift in the Republican party because a few more conservative "victories" like the one and the Republican party could become a non entity..
