One of the top Republicans involved in the shaping of the Healthcare debate in Washington D.C. this week will be Senator Johnny Isakson from Georgia, a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.
The all important committee debate on a proper plan will begin in Washington on Tuesday.
Isakson at this point does not support the new public insurance plan proposed by President Obama. ”I have concerns about proposals for a government-sponsored plan because it would be difficult for private entities compete with a government that regulates them and also doesn’t have to pay taxes“, Isakson said in his newsletter.
According to Senator Kent Conrad (D-ND), chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, there is still not enough support for the “public option”: You've got to attract some Republicans as well as holding virtually all of the Democrats together. And that, I don't believe, is possible with the pure 'public option.' I don't think the votes are there,” said Conrad on CNN.
Senator Isakson says he is committed to the Healthcare reform, and that any drafts and proposals coming his way he will examine very closely: “"This is 16 percent of the US economy gross domestic product and this is something we can't get wrong. This is something we can't mess up", Isakson told MyFoxAtlanta.
