When we talk about spirituality and writing and how they relate to one another, we invariably must talk about the heart and how we feel inside. Writing with a spiritual bent requires us to go deep inside of ourselves and to tap into the deep, soulful place within.

To become more in tune with your spirituality and to tap into that individual place of heart that can lead you to revelations and, in turn, provide you with endless material from which to write, try these three all-important steps:

1. Silence your critic.

Each of us has an inner critic who often berates us or chides us when we let our creativity out to play. In order to write in a more spiritual manner, you must silence that inner critic. Realize that nobody is perfect, and it is your imperfections that make you who you are as an individual. Muzzle your inner critic by gently telling him or her that you aren't choosing to listen to the constant barrage of criticism regarding why you aren't seasoned enough to write more spiritually, or why you don't have the experience to write anything at all. Every one of us has something to say, and no one or nothing should stop us from expressing ourselves. Shush your inner critic and begin your creative journey without guilt!

2. Journey deep within.

You may think you know who you are on the deepest level, but do you really? You might be surprised to learn that you have more layers to your heart, soul and personality than you could have ever imagined. Each person must become a personal archaeologist in order to diligently excavate every single remnant from his or her soul. In order to write deeper and from the hidden nooks and crannies of your heart, you will need to probe into the recesses of your spiritual essence and pull out long-dormant thoughts, ideas and feelings. The journey may be painful at times, and most certainly it will be surprising, but in the end if you plan to truly get in touch with your spirituality on paper (and share it with others), you'll be required to take this step.

3. Be honest with yourself.

To be an effective writer, you must express yourself through the written word in nothing short of honest terms. Your readers will demand it and you, as the writer, are doing yourself a disservice if you don't demand it of yourself. Perhaps, once you've journeyed inside yourself, you find what you thought were some of your staunchest spiritual beliefs weren't as firm as you once believed. Perhaps you have fears and worries you haven't discussed outside anyone but yourself. Writing is a deeply personal experience. It's akin to opening yourself up and letting the world see what's inside of you. That can be uncomfortable and jarring, even for seasoned writers. Regardless, you owe it to yourself and your readers to write as honestly as you can about any subject you undertake. Although readers may not agree with you, they will appreciate your upfront nature and willingness to expose raw truths on the page. Writing from the heart means that you must always write with honesty and integrity. Even if it stings a bit.
