In a charming and at times windy Sunday afternoon, about 200 Iranian-Americans gathered at Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos to acknowledge the generous efforts of a group of their fellow citizens who have called for a picnic to raise funds for the Gifted Children Scholarship Fund.

The organization which is on its way to become a 503(c)(3) non-profit entity has no political or religious affiliation. It sets its goals to not only provide financial support but to encourage young students to participate in the development of the community they live in. “Established in 2000 in northern California,” one of the volunteers suggests, “the GCSF serves 200 students in Iran who in return are supposed to work for their communities and pay the favor forward by becoming mentors to their neighbors, friends, and siblings.”

The GCSF which amongst those involved is affectionately referred to as Ayandeh Roshan [A Bright Future] has focused its activities on academic and fun excursions, psychotherapy, routine physical check-ups, artistic activities, family counseling, educations on conservation and waste, and such. During previous academic year, a total of 36 students completed the requirements for bachelor degrees and about 75% of their high-school graduates were able to pass the university entrance exam, six of whom were accepted to art colleges.

One of the activites Iranians love to get involved in at any outdoor gathering is a friendly game of volley ball

And of course no Persian gathering is truely Persian without music
