A non-profit organization, Hamzaban Cultural Foundation whose mission is to foster and safeguard Persian culture in Diaspora will hold its next meeting on Sunday, August 30 at Los Altos library. This month’s guest speaker is Sharareh Shahrokhi who will discuss a new approach to democracy and its effect on the traditional family’s changing structure.

Ms. Shahrokhi, who encourages attendees to consider the following questions, will examine the notion of democracy in an open forum with her audience:
1- Is democracy a utopia or a work-in-progress?
2- How many definitions exist for democracy?
3- What is your understanding of democracy?
4- What kind of social relationships, power structure, and/or political system, do you call democratic?
5- How is it possible to achieve democracy?
6- Is democracy the right solution for the Iranian society? Is Iran ready for it?
7- What is the role of family in developing a democratic mindset?

“Together, we can try to tackle these questions in order to get a better understanding of the issue,” Shahrokhi says. “We may or may not find our answers at the first or even next meeting. However, we may start a path of inquiry that leads us there eventually. We can help each other on this journey although we may not arrive at the same place together.”

A resident of Santa Cruz, Sharareh Shahrokhi holds a BA in Computer and Information Science and a MA in Philosophy. She teaches ethics at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose, and has presented at a number of conferences.
