As the whole world is a witness to the civil rights movement in Iran, Bay Area Iranian-Americans continue with their endeavor to attract United Nations’ attention to violation of human rights in Iran and to act as a voice for their compatriots by organizing candlelight vigils, rallies and now a hunger strike.

The announcement for the hunger strike published last night reads: “Please join us for a Hunger Strike to show solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Iran, and to demand that the United Nations take action on the urgent matter of the human rights of Iranian citizens.”

Participants are allowed to drink water and are encouraged to bring their own sleeping bags in order to stay overnight. The hunger strike is scheduled to start at 4pm on Thursday, July 2 in front of San Jose City Hall and is expected to end on Saturday, July 4, 2009.

The organizers ask interested parties to show their support by gathering at the location even if they are not able to participate in the actual hunger strike. A number of activities and outreach programs are scheduled to be carried out during the event.

For now, you are encouraged to:
• Post this announcement to your e-mail list, Facebook, Twitter and/or blog
• Contact media outlets to cover the event
• Call Amnesty International, Code Pink and MoveOn chapters to encourage them to show their solidarity

You may forward your suggestions and recommendations to humanrights4iran@gmail.com.
