Separating Iran from its Arab neighbors, the strategic body of water bordering the Southern part of the country has always been referred to as the Persian Gulf. Used in maps, travelogues, books, and in various languages, the name Persian Gulf enjoys a long and historic standing from the time of the Greek and the Romans. However, at the rise of Arab Nationalism and with helps from a number of Western countries—reminiscent of the old colonialism’s futile tries of stripping nations of their identities—attempts have been made to change its name to Arabian Gulf or simply the Gulf.
Here is a short history of the origin of the term and how the efforts to change a significant historic name started.
