Veterans Day was first named "Armistice Day" when President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as a commemoration to service member of WW I in November of 1919. US Congress officially acknowledged the end of WW I on June 4, 1926 by passing a resolution. On May 13, 1938 they made November 11 a legal holiday and changed "Armistice" to "Veterans" and on June 1, 1954 approved it to honor all American veterans of all wars. On October 8, 1954, President Eisenhower signed HR 7786 changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
Veterans Day is “a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.”
