If ice cream shops were high school students, Sebastian Joe's Ice Cream Café would be the cute, semi-alternative kid that moves seamlessly between the popular crowd and the art geeks.
This longtime local favorite has two locations (Uptown Minneapolis and Linden Hills/Edina), both serving up a rotating menu of handmade ice creams that attract hipster college kids and the stroller set, alike.
Flavors run the gamut from the expected (chocolate, vanilla, Oreo) to the unique (Danza di Limon is a dreamlike combination of lemon and almond slivers). Many are simple, yet delicious, twists on tradition, such as the popular raspberry chocolate chip and the mint milano.
I recently enjoyed the French Roast (the most authentically coffee-tasting ice cream I've tasted), while one of my kids did a dance of joy over his scoop of Oreo and the other was pleased with his risky choice of White Licorice (all the taste of black licorice, none of the black mouth).
In addition to cones, Sebastian Joe's offers a creative list of sundaes and unusual floats, many of which incorporate Monin® flavored syrups. (My kids are already plotting our next visit, when they plan to order the Blue Meany float.)
And on those days where you promised the kids ice cream, but all you want is some caffeine, you'll be happy to find that Sebastian Joe's is also a full café, complete with bakery case. The temptation never ends.
