For all you Baby Boomer fans of "Star Trek" -- it's baa-aack.

Fancast.com has a trailer of the new movie, "Star Trek," which is a prequel to the original series that starred William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy and aired on television from 1966-69. It deals with Capt. James T. Kirk (Shatner), Spock (Nimoy) and the other crew members in the earliest days of inter-stellar space and the USS Enterprise.

Here's the trailer:

Its scheduled release is May 8, 2009.

Director J.J. Abrams -- he of "Alias" and "Mission: Impossible III" -- picks up where Gene Rodenberry and Co. left off in continuing the Star Trek franchise of movies and television series.

On television, the original series ran for 80 episodes. It was followed by:

  • "The Next Generation" - 1987 to 1994, 178 episodes
  • "Deep Space Nine" - 1993 to 1999, 176 episodes
  • "Voyager" -- 1995 to 2001, 172 episodes
  • "Enterprise" -- 2001 to 2005, 98 episodes.

The Star Trek filmography includes:

  • "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"
  • "Wrath of Khan"
  • "Search for Spock"
  • "Voyage Home"
  • "Final Frontier"
  • "Undiscovered Country"
  • "Generations"
  • "First Contact"
  • "Insurrection"
  • "Nemesis"

"Star Trek" follows Kirk, played by Chris Pine, at Starfleet Academy, his first meeting with Spock (Zachary Quinto), and their battles with Romulans from the future, who are interfering with history. Nimoy has a role in the new movie; Shatner does not.
