Audi R8

If you drive an Audi R8, chances are pretty good you are a Baby Boomer. In fact, there's almost a 75 percent chance there's a Baby Boomer behind the wheel of that R8, according to J.D. Power and Associates.

The marketing information services company, at Examiner.com's request, compiled the 10 car models with the highest percent of Boomer owners for the period of Jan. 1 through Sept. 28, 2008. The Audi R8 came out on top with 72.3 percent, beating out the Chrysler Crossfire by almost 6 points.

These are not raw numbers of cars sold, said J.D. Power's Tom Libby, these are percentages of ownership. In other words, of all the Audi R8 drivers out there, almost three quarters of them will be Baby Boomers.

Here's how the Top 10 finished:

1. Audi R8                            73.2 percent

2. Chrysler Crossfire             67.3 percent

3. Lexus SC series                 64.5 percent

4. Volvo C70                        64.1 percent

5. Mazda MX-5                     63.1 percent

6. Chevrolet Corvette            62.0 percent

7. Audi A8/S8                       61.8 percent

8. Porsche Boxster                 61.2 percent

9. Mercedes-Benz SL-class    60.2 percent

10. Saturn Sky                        60.2 percent

The Honda and Toyota sedans might outsell these cars in raw numbers, said Libby, but the trend shows that the popularity of certain models among Baby Boomer drivers. Asked if he thought this list might show a trend of what cars could figure into a so-called mid-life crisis, Libby said, "Maybe it is."

He noted that Baby Boomers typically have the financial means to buy into this class of sporty, higher end cars. Here are the transactional prices for each vehicle:

Audi R8                             $133,923

Chrysler Crossfire              $28,153

Lexus SC Series                 $61,263

Volvo C70                         $40,443

Mazda MX-5                     $25,641

Chevrolet Corvette            $55,890

Audi A8/S8                       $82,133

Porsche Boxster                 $55,888

Mercedes-Benz SL-Class    $106,059

Saturn Sky                          $29,012

"This age group, when you're over 50, has the resources and you want this kind of escape," said Libby.

It's interesting to note that the Crossfire, while still on the market and popular among Baby Boomers, has been targeted by Chrysler to be phased out of production. Also of note, the fact that Audi had two models in the Top 10 -- at No. 1 and No. 7.
