Boys and Girls Club of Burbank & Greater East Valley, the Burbank Public Library, and the National Endowment for the Arts The Big Read are sponsoring events to celebrate Edgar Allan Poe throughout the month of October, including writing contests for grades 1 - 12.

The kick-off begins October 1 at 7 pm at the Burbank Public Library (Buena Vista Branch) with Duffy Hudson performing a one-man show as Poe, and readings from Nevermore: Prose and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe.

Scary Stories Night will be held on Thursday Oct. 15 at the Boys & Girls Club and will feature games, activities and more Poe stories and giveaways from 6-8 pm.

Poe's Haunted House takes place on Hallow's Eve (October 30) at the Boys & Girls Club at 7 pm.

Each event will help inspire children to write their own scary stories due October 31. Some teachers may be offering extra credit for students' participation.

For more information, contact the Boys and Girls Club.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.
