Jessica Bern is a comedienne, actress, creator of the video and blog series BERNTHIS, a published writer, LA Moms contributor, co-founder of The Mouthy Housewives, a humorous advice site for parents, and thriving LA single mom. Jessica writes:
"I’ve been a single mom for five years. The best advice I could give another single mother would be to remember that no matter what went on with you and your ex, at the end of the day you have this incredible child, this gift and that it is vital not to let that get lost in all the bitterness and acrimony
My favorite place to take my daughter is New York City. I grew up very near there and lived in the city for quite some time. Getting her used to walking two whole blocks after driving in L.A. all the time was hard but after saying “buck up, we’re in New York City, you’re walking” about a hundred times, I believe she got the message although whenever a cab goes by she’ll stop and stare at it like an old friend she doesn’t see much anymore.
My favorite part about being a mom in Los Angeles is the weather. It’s hard enough being a parent, but working around rain and snow and not having the option of throwing them out into the backyard and yelling, “only call me if you see blood”, would make it even more difficult as I’ve witnessed when I return home and watch my friends spend twenty minutes by the door wrapping up their kids like a burrito before venturing out into the snow.
Being a single mom was the greatest gift I could have ever given myself. Sounds crazy, yeah, okay, I never said I was normal, but I am much less fearful and just overall a stronger person then ever before and I know it’s because I have only myself to rely on and that is an example I am proud to set for my daughter. I think it’s important for our daughter’s to know that they can survive on their own and according to a Home Depot commercial I recently saw, even retile their own fireplace.
I have lovely neighbors here. I have no family and that has proven to be a burden but thankfully, I have people on my block that have stepped up when I had a real emergency.
I knew I was no longer just “surviving” when my blog BERNTHIS, started to take off and I could actually download stuff onto Typepad. I also knew things were getting better when I found myself partnering with four other well known humor bloggers to create TheMouthyHousewives, a humor advice site that provides you with a good laugh and a real tip for how to solve your day to day problems.
I knew I was thriving when I finally understood the symbol #FF on Twitter and began to get hired to make videos for companies such as Seventh Generation as a result of my web series which is also called "bernthis.com". That has been one of my goals all along, to be able to write and produce humor videos. To be paid to continue to make my series would be the ultimate dream but right now, I am very happy to be doing what I am doing."
