Most businesses are skipping Vista upgrade and will be going directly from XP to Windows 7 after its release October 22. Before the migration, you need to take certain things into consideration.

First, make sure that your hardware meets the minimum system requirements. Keep in mind that the bare minimum system specifications may result in diminished performance. It is advisable that you run the Microsoft’s Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor that will scan you system checking hardware, software, and peripherals. The scan will tell you if the system meets hardware requirements and identify compatibility issues.
Second, upgrading from XP to Windows 7 requires a Custom Install. Microsoft defines Custom Install as, “A custom (clean) installation gives you the option to either completely replace your current operating system or install Windows on a specific drive or partition that you select. You can also perform a custom installation if your computer does not have an operating system, or if you want to set up a multiboot system on your computer.” What does this mean to you as a consumer? The new operating system install will erase any and all data on your pc. Make sure that you back up the system before running the upgrade! Microsoft only allows specific upgrade paths to Vista users only.   The version of Vista has to match the Version of Windows 7 in order to be able to migrate settings, applications, etc: Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional, and Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate.
Third, the new operating system features Windows 7 Easy Transfer utility that assists you with backing a backup of your data settings. The utility comes one a DVD and is built into the operating system. You will need to run the DVD before installing the new operating system.
A word of advice, please familiarize yourself with the migration documentation and ensure that your users have received training.
