Motorola Android launches Friday November 6th: Should you make the purchase?
We have all heard the hype about the new Motorola Android that will be available exclusively from Verizon. This device designed to complete with the iPhone, falls short in a number of categories. Even though the Android features functional web browsing, email management with Active Sync functionality (all currently features of the iPhone), the device will have 10,000 applications for its platform. Meanwhile, the iPhone offers over 100,000 apps.
It is important to mention that the Android is limited to CDMA meaning that it is not a global roaming device. This will be a deal-breaker for a number of business users. It is also important to mention that the Android has the same limitations when it comes to Microsoft native file formats: Microsoft Office files open but are not editable and formats like .wav are not recognized as know file extensions.
Overall, the device is fairly bulky. While the slide out keyboard is nice to have, it makes the phone extremely heavy (for a smartphone that is). Being neither the iPhone nor a Windows mobile device your compatible software is hard to find and few and far between.
