The playoffs is still a reality for a number of WNBA teams
The race for the playoffs is still going strong as five teams compete for the one of the four coveted spots in
the eastern conference. New York is the only team eliminated from contention and Indiana is the lone team that has clinched a spot in the east. After only one year of existence, the Atlanta Dream is currently in second place in the eastern conference and has two games remaining against Connecticut and Washington. Detroit is only a half game behind the Dream with three games to be played. Currently sitting in fourth place is the Chicago Sky which is looking to make its first playoff appearance as well. Washington (15-17) and Connecticut (15-17) are currently on the outside looking in, but a couple of wins can put either or both of these teams in the top four.
As these teams make a final push for positioning, key players have been sidelined with injuries.
Katie Smith has missed a few games for Detroit due to a back injury along with the Fever’s
Katie Douglas who has been hampered with a sprained left ankle.
Sylvia Fowles recently returned to Chicago’s lineup, but has been playing limited minutes.
Los Angeles clinched a playoff birth in the western conference joining Seattle and Phoenix after defeating San Antonio on Tuesday. With Sacramento eliminated, San Antonio and Minnesota are vying for the final spot. San Antonio has two games remaining against Sacramento (9/10) and Seattle (9/12) while the Lynx has three games left against Detroit (9/9), Los Angeles (9/11), and Sacramento (9/13).
I’m predicting that Chicago and Atlanta will make their first playoff appearance this season. Detroit has three more games to play (Minnesota, New York, and Chicago) and will most likely lock up a playoff spot this year. Even though Minnesota has a compelling collection of talent, experience will win out in the end giving the Silver Stars another chance at a title.

Thursday 9/10
