Sky Blue FC defeated the Boston Breakers 1-0 on Saturday afternoon on corner kick in the 6th minute by Heather O’ Reilly which curved over into the goal. Breakers goalkeeper Alli Lipsher got her glove on it, but couldn’t retain it.  “I can’t say that I meant to bend that in, but I think we did a good job earning that corner kick,” stated O’ Reilly about her goal. “I thought it was going to be swinging out of bounds, but luckily it clipped right into the near post.”

Breakers defender Heather Mitts left the game after colliding with a Sky Blue player in the first half. While Mitts was ready to return to the field before the start of the second, the doctor told her she was going to require stitches which would have taken 15 to 20 minutes. Breakers coach Tony DiCicco opted to replace her with Kacey Moore. DiCicco was displeased with the lack of fouls called on the field. “It’s hard to play catch-up. Right now defenders on all teams have too much license to be destructive without consequence,” stated DiCicco about the rough nature of the match. According to DiCicco, a reason why there are so many low scoring games in WPS is because defenders are not getting called for fouls. A matter he stated he will look into further.

Both the Breakers and Sky Blue couldn’t capitalize on opportunities to tie or put the game away – evidence of the goalkeeping by both Sky Blue’s Jenni Branam and Boston’s Alli Lipsher who had five and six saves, respectively.

Sky Blue forward Kerri Hanks played some minutes late in the second half. Hanks was recently traded from the St. Louis Athletica along with Brazilian international Francielle and the rights to Brazilian international Renata Costa for Australian international Sarah Walsh, the rights to Brazilian international Ester, and a draft pick. “I know her confidence is a little low right now,” stated Sky Blue head coach Kelly Lindsey. “We wanted to give her some minutes to show her on film. She worked in a different philosophy than what we are under so it’s good for her to get out there and play some minutes.”

Sidelined for Sky Blue on Saturday was forward Natasha Kai who injured her shoulder in a previous game. “I think she’ll probably be back in a week or so,” stated Coach Lindsey. “With so many national team members being out in a few weeks we want to make sure she is healthy. It’s just a precautionary thing this week.”

Sky Blue now has a record of 4-6-3 on the season and sits in fifth place in the standings. The Breakers still hold its second place spot behind the Los Angeles Sol. Sky Blue will be facing the Boston Breakers again next Sunday, July 12 at Harvard Stadium in Cambridge, MA.
