WNBA kicks off season on Saturday
The WNBA tips its season off tomorrow with six games on the schedule. Here is a rundown of Saturday’s matchups:.jpg)
Detroit @ Los Angeles 2:30pm EST
The Shock will be playing without
Kara Braxton who has been suspended for 6 games for pleading guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol. Also absent will be Sparks forward Candace Parker who just recently gave birth to her first child. Tina Thompson will be making her debut for the Sparks.
Zalika’s Pick: Los Angeles
Seattle @ Sacramento 4 pm EST
A familiar face returns to the lineup for Sacramento in
Hamchétu Maiga-Ba – a role player for the Monarchs during its championship run. With Lauren Jackson, Swin Cash, and Suzy Batkovic-Brown, Seattle looks powerful in the post. Let’s see how Oklahoma’s double-double Queen, Courtney Paris, can handle these veterans down low.
Zalika’s Pick: Seattle
Washington @ Connecticut 4 pm EST
The Mystics are going through a coaching change (when aren’t they going through one?) as head coach Julie Plank hopes to revive this sinking ship. Even though I want to expect good things from the Mystics this season, I have to realize that it’s still the Mystics. Last season, the Sun had only two returning starters and still was able to make the playoffs. Head coach Mike Thibault knows how to play toward his strengths. This is classic matchup that usually ends with the Sun on top.
Zalika’s Pick: Connecticut
Indiana @ Atlanta 7pm EST
The return of Chamique Holdsclaw, who will now be suiting up for the Atlanta Dream after a 2 year hiatus, should have an immediate impact for the Dream. Atlanta has a lot of new faces on the roster (Angel McCoughtry, Coco Miller, Sancho Lyttle, Michelle Snow, etc.) and the squad may still be jelling come Saturday. The Fever have had the roster to make the playoffs in the past. Even so, Indiana has never made it past the Eastern Conference Finals. Indiana is already a strong defensive team looking to add the outside shooting with Katie Douglas, Briann January, and Christina Wirth.
Zalika’s Pick: Indiana
Chicago @ Minnesota 8pm EST
Just as I thought the
Minnesota Lynx couldn’t get any younger, they do the impossible. The Lynx has one player who has hit the age of 30 in point guard Kelly Miller. With an abundance of youthful talent and the promotion of Jennifer Gillom to head coach a few days before the start of the regular season, I’m going to give Chicago the upper hand. The Lynx has the better outside shooters, but Chicago has the advantage inside.
Zalika’s Pick: Chicago
San Antonio @ Phoenix 10pm EST
With Phoenix lacking depth in the front court, the Silver Stars should win the battle down low against the Mercury on Saturday. Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter should be well rested with the later start to the season, but the team still has a lot of work a head of them. For the Silver Stars, Beck Hammon and a healthy Shanna Crossly and Helen Darling should open up the post down low for veteran center Ruth Riley and forward Sophia Young.
Zalika’s Pick: San Antonio
