Candace Parker is expecting – no, not another award- but her first child. That’s right. The two-time NCAA champion, WNBA MVP and Rookie of the Year, and Olympic gold medalist is expecting to have her child this spring with husband, Sheldon Williams. Which brings us to a very important question: will she be participating in the 2009 season? Parker is training for her return for the 2009 season, but I’m guessing she will most likely miss a part of it.

Parker’s pregnancy will no doubt impact the league in 2009. WNBA President Donna Orender is probably a little concerned how the league will perform in this economy when its biggest superstar might be missing part of the season to have her first child.

With all those Sparks games being aired on ESPN2, it makes you wonder who is going to want to watch this team with just one an aging star and a second-rate backcourt.

Outstanding rookie superstars usually do not get pregnant after boasting such a stellar season, but it seems as though Parker wanted to have a family, so what better time to start than right now. She has already accomplished so much. Why not take a year off?

This could all just be a conspiracy created by the Los Angeles Sparks to hoard the best talent in women’s basketball by having certain players go “missing” for a season. When Lisa Leslie missed the 2007 season due her pregnancy, the once mediocre Sparks had an atrocious year with a record of 10-24. The Sparks won the first overall pick for the 2008 draft in which they selected Candace Parker. Los Angeles was subsequently ranked as one of the top teams in 2008, and then returned to the western conference finals only to be ousted by the San Antonio Silver Stars. It worked well once. Why not try it again?
