Where were we? WNBA season resumes

We can’t look forward to the rest of the WNBA season without figuring out where we left off.

Eastern Conference

1) Connecticut Sun

Australian Erin Phillips will be back in the lineup for Connecticut after missing the 2007 season due to a knee injury. The Sun also acquired free agent Svetlana Abrosimova who previously played for the Minnesota Lynx and release Jolene Anderson. They ended play on a three-game win streak. Head Coach Mike Thibault once again turns water into wine.

2) New York Liberty

New York finished play with wins over the Atlanta Dream, the L.A. Sparks and the Washington Mystics. They moved up in the rankings and can solidify a top spot in the east. New York has a mix of underrated players and up-and-coming talent with a full-court press that’s no joke.

3) Detroit Shock

The Shock has been a busy team lately. The brawl at the Palace led to the suspension of half their players, the demise of their number two spot in the rankings, and the loss of their dignity after acquiring 50-year-old Nancy Lieberman. The Shock thankfully released Lieberman from her contract and picked up Kelly Schumacher, which is only a minor improvement. They eventually got their act together and traded away Tasha Humphrey, Eshya Murphey, and a 2009 second-round draft pick to the Washington Mystics for Taj McWilliams-Franklin.

4) Indiana Fever

The Fever defeated the Phoenix Mercury in Phoenix to close out play before the break. Tully Bevilaqua returns to the lineup after missing several games do to her commitment with the Australian national team. The Indiana Fever also signed Doneeka Lewis.

5) Washington Mystics
Sheila Johnson, the president of the Washington Mystics, went on a tirade lambasting her team’s lousy 11 year history. On a totally unrelated note, she thinks General Manager Linda Hargrove is doing a fantastic job. The Mystics trade away veteran center Taj McWilliams-Franklin and gained fresh young talent in Eshaya Murphey and Tasha Humphrey.

6) Chicago Sky

The Sky went into the break on a two game losing streak. They are struggling at 5th place, but are only 3 ½ games back out of 4th. The Sky can make a final push for a spot in the playoffs with Sylvia Fowles back in the lineup.

7) Atlanta Dream

The Dream are a few games shy of being mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Betty Lennox doesn’t like to sit on the bench. Head Coach Marynell Meadors doesn’t like arrogant point guards. The Dream signed Nikki Teasly – a point guard.

Western Conference

1) San Antonio Silver Stars

The Silver Stars look to distance themselves from the rest of the west and secure home court advantage in the playoffs. The Silver Stars signed Valeriya Berezhynska to a seven-day contract. For those of you who don’t know Berezhynska is a 6-4 center from Rice. She was drafted by Detroit as the number 42nd overall pick but was waived soon after.

2) Seattle Storm

The Storm will have to finish the rest of the regular season and probably most of the playoffs without Lauren Jackson and maybe Swin Cash. Don’t get your hopes up thinking Yolanda Griffith and Sheryl Swoopes can help carry this team deep into the playoffs. They’ve both had a less than outstanding season with the Storm thus far.

3) Los Angeles Sparks

The Sparks got out of the brawl practically unscathed and finished play with a win over the Minnesota Lynx. Head Coach Michael Cooper got his starting point guard Temeka Johnson back and subsequently waived Amber Jacobs.

4) Sacramento Monarchs

The Monarchs are standing at 4th place and are creeping up on Los Angeles in the rankings. Both teams stand at 15-12. Sacramento was on a 7 game win streak before losing to Seattle. Monarchs point guard Ticha Penicheiro can now pass and shoot.

5) Houston Comets

The Comets are on a 5-game win streak and now out of the bottom spot in the west. They are only a half-game back out of 4th and are looking to continue their winning ways when play resumes.

6) Minnesota Lynx

This team showed so much promise at the beginning of the season, then went on a 5 game losing streak in June. The Lynx are not short on young talent and hopefully can jumpstart a run back into playoff contention. They currently sit at .500 with their last game being a loss to Los Angeles.

7) Phoenix Mercury

I hope Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter got some rest in Beijing. They will need to take the Mercury out of last place and back into the playoffs without their Aussie teammate, Penny Taylor. This team has been lethargic all year, partly because their players play overseas too much.
