Becky Hammon going for bronze

August 21, 10:31 PM
by Zalika Green, Women's Sports Examiner

With all the controversy surrounding Becky Hammon playing for Russia, they really haven’t played any better with her in Beijing than they did without her in Athens. Russia again had a chance to advance to the gold-medal game and they lost to the United States, again. Maybe they need to find more disgruntled American basketball players for the 2012 Olympics.

Even though she hasn’t made much of an impact in the advancement of Russia’s medal placement, Becky Hammon was still the leading scorer going into Thursday’s semifinal game against the United States. Unfortunately, the reality of playing against the team she had hoped to play for got the best of her. She finished the game with 3 points, 1-6 shooting from the field, with her only basket coming late in the fourth quarter. The U.S., who I’m sure had plenty of tape on Hammon, denied her the ball on defense and didn’t allow her to create wild circus shots in the lane. The one player who kept Russia in the game was Maria Stepanova. She led the team in scoring with 14 points and 5 rebounds. Becky Hammon has one more chance to score some hardware in the bronze-medal game against China on Saturday.
