Maybe this will be a rebuilding year after all for Pat Summit as her seventh-ranked Lady Vols fell to 15th-ranked Virginia 83-82 at Thompson-Boling Arena on Monday. Tennessee had no answer against Virginia’s Monica Wright who tallied 35 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals.
Tennessee led by five at 80-75 with less than two minutes remaining in the game, but couldn’t retain the lead going into the final stretch. A quick three-pointer by Wright and a layup by Whitny Edwards tied the score at 80. The Lady Vols were able to regain the lead on a pair of free throws by Alex Fuller, but Wright responded with a jump shot to tie the score again at 82. With six seconds remaining in regulation Virginia’s Britnee Millner hit the front end of a one-and-one to give Virginia the lead and the win, 83-82.
After the game Tennessee Coach Pat Summit questioned her team’s resilience. “I think our defense just really let us down,” Summit stated after the loss. “Monica Wright pretty much just dominated. I don’t think we had the mental discipline and toughness to defend a player like that. We never really committed to stopping her.”
For the Lady Vols, freshman point guard Briana Bass led her team in scoring with 13 points, 4 assists and 3 steals. Shekinna Stricklen added in 12 points and 4 rebounds.
The Lady Vols next game is at Chattanooga on Friday at 6:30 p.m. EST. The Virginia Cavaliers will be playing at Old Dominion on Friday at 7 p.m.
