Sushi is not required to enjoy Sushi King
I have to admit that I’m not a fan of sushi. My friend loves sushi, so finding a place that can satisfy both our appetites is appreciated. Sushi King is just the place, especially if you are heading downtown to see a movie or need a break from shopping.
They don’t have any entrees for us non-sushi people, but they have some great appetizers. At my last visit I tried their baked green mussels ($6.25) and the vegetable tempura ($5.95).
The mussels were succulent and flavorful, baked in a spicy mayonnaise and served with tiny fish eggs. The vegetable
tempura is lightly breaded and fried pieces of zucchini, sweet potato, bell pepper, pumpkin, onion, broccoli, and carrot. The carrot seems a little strange in the mix, but the rest is tasty, especially the slightly sweet red bell pepper with the crisp breading and dipped in soy sauce.
Sushi-wise my friend likes their salmon sashimi; raw fish without the rice/roll (7 pieces for $10.65). She also appreciates their dragon roll; but now prefers more raw fish. The dragon roll is partially cooked with fresh water eel. She also tried their seaweed salad. A very pickled salad, I’m not a fan, but she really liked it.
For vegetarians there are several choices. They have 8 different vegetarian sushi choices from the avocado roll to the New Mexico with deep fried green chili, cucumber, avocado and sauce on top.
Sushi King serves wine and beer. I definitely suggest the Lindeman’s Reserve Merlot. For something a little sweeter, my friend likes the White Zinfandel (there was only one on the menu).
You can find Sushi King just around the corner from the downtown movie theater at
118 Central Avenue SW, see map. 842-5099. Open M-Th 11am-9:30pm; F 11am-11pm; S 12pm-11pm; S 12pm-9:30pm.
Next time I’d try the calamari tempura and save some room for green tea ice cream. If you go, I hope you find something that your tastebuds like as much as mine have.
