Douglas Valley Organic Vineyards is located 3860 Cohodas Road just north of Manistee near the shores of Lake Michigan. The acreage combines the former Cohodas farm and Lakeview Orchards. Cliff Boomer purchased the land and is developing the Douglas Valley Organic Vineyard Community which includes the winery and farm market. Here is part of their story:
"Douglas Valley is "USDA Certified Organic" (since 1990), and harvests organic cherries, blueberries, apples and of course wine grapes. During harvesting months we have a Farm Market overflowing with local organic vegetables including tomatoes, green beans, onions, peppers, zucchini, squash, fresh herbs and beautiful flowers OFF THE FRONT PORCH OF OUR OWN FARM MARKET. At the very heart of this development is the vineyard, where 8000 vines of Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, are planted. Our first "harvest" of these grapes is expected in Fall 2009."
The onsite tasting room is the train stop hotel of the old Manistee & North Eastern Railroad. The updated building has a new field stone porch where you are welcome to sit and sip their Stone House Hard Ciders and Bunk House Wines. The tasting room is open Monday through Saturday from 11 am until 6 pm, and Sunday from noon until 5 pm.
