The Benjamin Twiggs website says that not only are cherries delicious,
"The cherry industry in its continuing research efforts to unlock the health secrets of tart cherries, discovered that tart cherries are an excellent source of compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds are thought to be beneficial in protecting against cancer, heart disease and other illnesses and may help relieve the pain of gout and arthritis.
Specifically, the research conducted by Michigan State University confirmed in laboratory tests that the anti-inflammatory compound in tart cherries to be at least 10 times more active than that found in aspirin. The signifcance is that tart cherries may not only be more effective in controlling some forms of pain, they may do so with none of the adverse side effects of aspirin on stomach or kidneys."
"Tart cherries also contain 17 compounds with antioxidant properties. The antioxidant activity of these tart cherry compounds, under the MSU evaluation system, was found to be superior when compared to vitamin E and C and some synthetic antioxidants. Two of these compounds are used in several commercially prepared health products used to improve memory, concentration and vision. Other research on four anthocyanins found in tart cherry compounds indicates a potential of these properties to inhibit the growth of colon cancer tumors. " [Source: Cherry Marketing Institue, P.O.
