A compelling article by Anna Lappe for Sustainable Table suggests that farm-factory meat production is more responsible for global warming (18% of the total effect) than the exhaust from cars, trains, and planes. This is easier to believe if you have ever driven behind a truck hauling hogs to market. According to Lappe:

Eat for the Climate
Many of the resources at Sustainable Table can help you make climate-friendly food choices every day. Here are some of the principles of low-carbon dining, with links to more info:
  • Eat less meat and dairy: Go cold turkey, or just trim your consumption. Try cutting out meat just one day of the week. Check out Meatless Monday for more inspiration.

  • Choose organic and sustainably raised foods: Visit the Eat Well Guide

  • Eat local: Lower your food mile odometer, and always try to look for local sustainable food. Get inspired with these ideas and by the original locavores.

  • Eat whole foods: Cut back on processed foods—visit the ST's Sustainable Kitchen for recipes and cooking ideas. Check out your "carbon foodprint" at Bon Appetit's Low-Carbon Diet Calculator.

  • Take back the tap: Kick the bottled water habit. Visit Food & Water Watch for more information about the environmental impact of bottled water, the benefits of tap water, and how you can add your voice to the citizens across the country demanding better regulation of our precious public resource—water.

This is worth the read. Making some of the small changes suggested by Lappe helps the planet as well and contributing to your own better health. Where else have we read that we should:
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables.
  • Eat organically grown food.
  • Drink filtered tap water from your own kitchen.
  • Eat fewer processed foods.
