There is a wonderful shop and studio in Royal Oak owned by Marcia Hovland that sells her handmade tiles and jewelry. The shop is located at 415 E. 4th Street, and there is a parking lot and plenty of street parking available. The shop is open Monday through Saturday from 11 am until 6 pm. The phone number is 248 398 2951.

Hovland is a talented artist in both design and decoration. Her tiles have a painterly quality that makes them especially heartwarming and endearing.

Some tiles are flat, some have a raised design, but many pieces are three dimensional. Hovland talks about bringing her painted figures into the three dimensional realm.

There are beautiful wall and architectural tiles, as well as pendants, ornaments, buttons, trays, and bowls. I bought several buttons in the shape of a cat's head. The pastel colors are elegant while the design is playful. Notice the assortment of Hovland's angels and you will want to become a collector. The detailed work is amazing.

There are themed tiles for mother and baby, teachers, holidays, knitting, prince and princess, peace, and more.

The studio portion of the shop is at the back and you can see the work in progress. Hovland is well known for her almost constant supply of new ideas.

The shop also sells the work of other area artists including Motawi and Pewabic pottery.

More info: Marcia Hovland is one of several outstanding local artists who will be selling at the Ridge Fine Art & Handmade Wares Show scheduled for November 21 and 22 at the Community Center at 4 Ridge Road, Pleasant Ridge. The Center is one block south of I-696 and one block west of Woodward.
