When Janice Stevenson moved Wackenhut Gartens to Dexter, she made exciting changes to the business that include an expanded inventory with a stylish and artistic approach to decorating. Paul Wackenhut is still offering high quality landscape material, including mulch, topsoil, stone, rocks, boulders, and flagstone. He is also available for excavation projects, such as large scale ponds. And, the friendly atmosphere and warm welcome are still evident.

The new shop, with ample parking, is fun, colorful, and filled with the "garden tools and treasures" that Stevenson promotes.

The gardening season is nearing an end, but you can find large pots of colorful mums for sale. Inside, there are pumpkins and witches this month, as well as new art glass pieces from Jordan Valley Glassworks in East Jordan, Michigan, just south of Charlevoix. You will fall in love with the exhibit of glass vegetables, especially the multicolored pumpkins. The shop has lots of nature figures in glass, resin, and cast stone, including many pieces by George Carruth of nearby Waterville, Ohio.

Wackenhut Gartens is a wonderful source for gardening tools and books. Ask to see the handmade aprons (created by Stevenson's mother on an antique treadle sewing machine). There is an impressive variety of indoor/outdoor hanging art.

The more you look at the artful displays, the more you see the individual pieces that would look just as wonderful in your home. Whether you like birds, butterflies, or flowers, there is something to delight the eye. You can also find Dragonfly Candles to add a fresh scent.
