What are you or your kids going to be for Halloween this year? Is this the year you make the costumes instead of investing a lot of money. If you need a boost to your imagination, look to the web.

One great idea starts with leotards or sweats. Be a skunk. Wear black and then add a white stripe down your back. Tail is optional. Click here for more great ideas. See the photo below for more inspiration.

Try some ideas from FamilyFun.com if you feel crafty. How about a life-size bug; click on Big Bug. For a great idea using the many small stuffed animals that fill our houses, you can be a puppy; click on Pick of the Litter. This Disney Family website has ideas for very small children as well as great last minute ideas for the procrastinators among us. Detailed instructions are included

The Family Education website has many great costume ideas. Click on Fun Outfits in a Flash for a list of things you can make from a cardboard box including:
  • Robot
  • Television
  • Planes, trains, and automobiles
  • Race car
  • Firefighter in a fire engine

These great tips come from the Amazing Mom website.

  • Select a costume that won't fall apart before the night's festivities are over.
  • Make sure the costume won't hamper your child's movement.
  • Consider face paint as a safe alternative to masks, especially for younger children.
The moms also have ideas for the "very" last minute costume including:
Chalkboard Costume: Wear green sweats and shirt. Attach an eraser to a baseball cap. Carry chalk with you and people can write on you.
 Carved Pumped Art
Carved Pumpkin Art by local squirrels

If you want to try for some creative carving ideas, this is the handiwork of squirrels on my front porch last year.

The web is a great place for ideas, but some sites are not suitable for children. Surf with your children to be sure the content is G-rated.

If you plan to go trick-or-treating, make sure your child will be warm enough in their costume.

Put fresh batteries in the flashlight before you head out for candy and treats.
