According to Old House Gardens in Ann Arbor, you can plant bulbs starting from when the soil temperature falls below 60º for as long as the soil remains workable. That makes right now prime bulb planting time. Your hard work this fall will reward you in the spring.

Knowing there will be new blooms in your garden adds to the anticipation of warmer weather ahead. Perusing the plant catalogs during the snowy nights in January and February is somehow more enjoyable when you can add the idea of adding plants that will blend, contrast, or provide a backdrop to your new spring flowers.

Of course, planting bulbs that will be there in the spring and not be eaten as a fall treat by the neighborhood wildlife is another worthwhile goal. And if your garden is a destination for deer in the spring, you are looking for alternatives to planting tulips.

This list of "critter-resistant" bulbs to try comes from Canadian Gardening
  • Muscari Armeniacum
  • Fritillaria Persica
  • Eranthis hyemalis
  • Narcissus ‘Tête-à-tête’
  • Allium ‘Globemaster’
  • Galanthus Nivalis
  • Fritillaria Meleagris
  • Nectaroscordum siculum
  • Iris Danfordiae
  • Fritillaria imperialis
  • Narcissus ‘Ice Follies’
  • Leucojum aestivum
  • Scilla siberica
  • Crocus tommasinianus (note: squirrels love other types of crocuses).

This list of good bets to keep the deer from eating your garden comes from DeerResistantPlants.com in Clare:
  • Narcissus
  • Fritillaria
  • Giant Allium
  • Daffodil

Owner Dave Jenson also recommends and sells 8-foot mesh fencing to keep deer away from your gardens..
