I saw a junco at the bird feeder. The winter birds are here. And, there are lots of birds that live in Southeast Michigan year round. I see cardinals, blue jays, sparrows, juncos, chickadees, woodpeckers, and others in my yard. There are even some robins that spend the winter.
I have one feeder filled with wild bird seed mix, another with thistle, and a suet cage. There are nearby trees and shrubs that give the birds some cover if they feel threatened.
The Billy Bear website has a quiz to help kids learn to identify birds that stay in Michigan for the winter. There are even videos.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has a three-page newsletter that includes a wonderful pattern for creating a "snowflake" with birds that kids can color. Click here. .png)

Emily Bingham, assistant editor at Traverse, Northern Michigan's Magazine, suggests you try feeding the winter birds:
overripe berries, melon and pumpkin seeds, eggshells, peanut butter, stale nuts, cooked pasta and even grape jelly (woodpeckers love the stuff)
Northbirding.com says Black-Capped Chickadees like sunflower seeds and suet feeders and are likely to come to the feeders in small groups.
