The Yankees are world champions of baseball for the 27th time.

On Wednesday night Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, and Derek Jeter met at the mound in November one more time to break their stoic self-deprecation and enjoy their accomplishment uninhibited by expectations.

The core of four has been there before, but for the rest it was a new feeling that no one could quite describe beyond, “incredible.”

No one rose above the pressure of the biggest stage in sports more than Hideki Matsui Wednesday night.

Godzilla poured in the performance that in the end won him the MVP trophy – 3 for 4 including a double and a homerun, 6 RBI, and a .615 World Series batting average.

That’s not to shortchange Andy Pettitte who pitched the clincher for each of the three postseason series or Derek Jeter and his .344 postseason batting average, but even starting just three of the six World Series games, Hideki Matsui was a monster.

No matter how many people say they are ‘expected’ to win or ‘with that payroll they better win’, they still need to play it out on the field.

All season the Yankees have come together to play as a team, picking each other up when someone couldn’t get it done.

This Yankee win is gratifying for fans, not because they ‘are supposed to win’ but because the best team did win.
