Another thrilling extra-inning playoff baseball game in this ALCS, but this time the Yankees were on the other side of the drama.
In the bottom of the 11th inning with two outs and the bases empty, Joe Girardi pulled the coasting David Robertson for Alfredo Aceves.
A single to Howie Kendrick and a double from Jeff Mathis – and it was all over, 5-4.
By tomorrow morning no one will remember Jorge Posada’s game-tying homer in the eighth or Andy’s Pettitte’s three run effort.
Time ran out on the next clutch hit for the Yankees so the only thing fans will remember was manager Joe Girardi’s trip to mound when Robertson seemingly had a trip to the 12th inning (which would have included Teixeira and A-Rod batting) seemingly in hand.
Girardi has faced spotty criticism over over-managing, dulled by winning, through the playoffs– a common criticism of young managers new to the playoffs. Monday night’s loss won’t help.
Without a win to drown out the critics, Girardi will draw fire for his over-efforts in Game 3.
CC Sabathia is set to take on Scott Kazmir Tuesday at 7:57 PM in Anaheim on three days rest for Game 4.
CC threw 113 pitches in Friday’s win and after using seven relievers for 4.2 innings Monday night, Yankee pitchers will have less rest Tuesday than they have thus far into the playoffs.
