The Yankees extended their win streak to seven games on a 10th-inning grand slam from Bobby Abreu to beat the Blue Jays 6-2 on Wednesday in Toronto.
The current streak is too little too late as the Yankees have already been eliminated from postseason play, but a solid performance from Phil Hughes is very encouraging.
Hughes poured in eight innings of work giving up only two runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
This is the best and longest start for Hughes as a Yankee in a disappointing 2008, though he did not get his first win of the season.
Blue Jays starter AJ Burnett likely has made his last start of the year and last start as a Blue Jay, which was a sparkling eight-inning, 11-strikeout night with only seven hits and two runs (one earned).
Had Burnett gotten the win, his 19th of the season, he may have come back on three days rest to go for 20.
The 31-year-old will likely elect to opt out of his five-year, $55 million contract after three seasons with 2008 being the best of his 10-season career.
The Yankees are expected to be in the conversation of signing Burnett, but the righty’s durability and consistency have raised concerns.
Phil Hughes ends his disappointing season on a high note and will head to the Arizona Fall League before competing for a spot in the starting rotation in the spring.
