In an evening where the game itself seemed ceremonial, played to mark the occasion, the Yankees held off official playoff elimination by beating the Orioles 7-3.

Joe Girardi gave Derek Jeter the opportunity to be recognized by the fans on his own by removing the shortstop with one out left in the ninth inning.

Smiles and tears were on the faces of everyone in the building, including The Captain himself who took a moment after the game to thank the fans on behalf of the organization.

With 11 pitches, Mariano Rivera closed Yankee Stadium.

Fittingly, the man Reggie Jackson referred to as one of the top five most important Yankees in history was the last to throw a pitch at the Cathedral.

It was a perfect inning.
