On Thursday night at Yankee Stadium, fans get their first look at rookie call-up Juan Miranda as the Yankees take on the Central Division-leading Chicago White Sox.
Miranda was brought up to the big leagues on Wednesday following a loss by the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in the Bricktown Showdown – the inter-league championship game.
The 25-year-old (or maybe 27-year-old, it’s the subject of some debate) left fielder/first baseman put in a solid performance in his first year in Scranton hitting .287 with 52 RBI and 40 runs over 99 games.
In the pre-season, Miranda was rated the number 21 prospect in the Yankees organization ahead of a now-familiar pitcher named David Robertson.
Assuming Jorge Posada will be a functional catcher and Jason Giambi won't be with the team or will be a fulltime DH, Miranda could see some more major league action at first base in 2008 if he leaves a good impression and continues to show progress.
