Over the fourth and fifth innings at Camden Yards on Sunday afternoon, the Yankees squandered a 7-2 lead to see the game tied in the fifth on a Brian Roberts homer off of Edwar Ramirez.
In the seventh, though, it was Robinson Cano to the rescue. The highlight of the slumping slugger’s 4 for 5, 2-RBI night came as a towering 425 foot go-ahead homerun in front of the Yankee-friendly crowd in Baltimore. This could signal the beginning of another hot streak for the struggling youngster.
The offense was plentiful on both sides as New York recorded 15 hits and Baltimore 14 over the course of the four hour outing. Starting pitching, on the other hand, was scarce as neither side could make it out of the third inning before getting the hook.
Five runs (3 earned), 8 hits, 2 of which were homeruns, in only 3 1/3 innings for Rasner has to be a concern as we approach do-or-die time. A sweep of the Orioles is very encouraging and gives this week’s series against Bost
on real importance, but on most nights and against playoff contending teams, that sort of performance will not do.
While the Yanks and Red Sox are idle Monday in advance of their Tuesday meeting, the Twins head to Seattle for a 3-game set against the hapless Mariners. The Twins stand a half game behind the ChiSox (who beat the Rays Sunday) in the Central and one game behind the BoSox in the Wild Card race.
