AP Photo Elise AmendolaAccording to Jon Heyman here and ESPN here, the Yankees and Mark Teixeira have reached an agreement in the area of eight years and $180 million.

This suprising development would be the third blockbuster free agent signing of the offseason by the Yankees preceded by CC Sabathia here and AJ Burnett here.

The Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals were believed to be the frontrunners for the superstar first baseman with the Baltimore Orioles also in the fray.

Reports on previous offers are varied but are somewhere in this area:

  • Nationals: 8 years, $178-$183 million
  • Red Sox: 8 years, $170-175 million
  • Orioles: 7 years, $140-$145 million

While the Yankees' offer may or may not be the highest he has received, it is the highest from a serious contender.
