On Thursday afternoon, when Mike Mussina officially announced the retirement that we all saw coming, he added a twist that we certainly didn’t anticipate.
“I lied to all of you. I knew that that was going to be my last year since the first day of spring training.”
He knew from early spring that he would tip his cap at Yankee Stadium for the final time and never see the view from the mound at the new stadium. He knew he would be relaxing with his family in Pennsylvania, but he didn’t say a word.
Some might be tempted to phone it in when they know they’re making their farewell tour, but Mike poured in one of the best seasons of his 18-year career.

Tony DeMarco, Baseball Examiner, outlined the arguments for and against Mussina in the Hall quite well here.
Don’t forget, Mussina played for the Orioles for a while too. For the Baltimore take and a funny look at the inanities of the Hall of Fame debates, read Jay Trucker, Baltimore Orioles Examiner, here.
For the best take on Mike Mussina’s retirement from someone who got to know him off the field, read this take from the Bergen Record’s Pete Caldera here.
