Photo by Jed Jacobsohn/Getty ImagesOn Tuesday, new Yankee acquisition Nick Swisher addressed the press on a media conference call followed immediately by a spot with Mike Francesa on WFAN 660 AM.

Background for the Swisher trade here.

I was surprised to hear how at ease and casual Swisher sounded.  His West Virginia accent was evident and with his good guy optimism he seemed to be entirely at ease.

It wasn’t inappropriate, he seems to be the professional you would expect in a Yankee uniform, but he seemed to be comfortable and genuine.  You can hear what people talk about when they say he has a great attitude about everything.

Swisher had all the classic new Yankee lines including ‘I’m honored to be a Yankee’, ‘this is the best and most respected franchise in the world’, and of course ‘I’m just here to win and I’ll do whatever I need to’.

They’re clichés, but there’s nothing wrong with a cliché when it’s true.

Swisher sidestepped questions about his experience in Chicago only mentioning that he’s working hard to perform better than he did in 2008.  He did definitively say that his best position is first base but that he’s prepared to play anywhere he needs to.

Swisher is signed through 2011 plus a 2012 club option so let’s hope his attitude comes along with the good play he’s capable of.
