"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"

Publisher: Vintage Press

Suggested retail price: 14.95

I was a little leery at first to read another "first" book in a series.  I have enough trouble trying to keep up with the ones that I am dedicated to now.  But, I was seeking something a little different and this book seemed to fit the bill.  I was pleased with this first novel by Stieg Larsson.

The setting takes place mostly in Sweden. It is the story of magazine publisher Mikael Blomkvist, who has been indicted on libel and defamation charges for a story he wrote about a billionaire financier. Now unemployed, disgraced and awaiting the beginning of his prison sentence, Mikael is approached by industrialist Henrik Vanger, who wishes to commission the journalist to research his biography and investigate the truth surrounding the disappearance of Vanger's niece Harriet, who vanished without a trace under suspicious circumstances over 40 years ago. Mikael reluctantly accepts his offer.  As the investigation gets more complicated, Mikael seeks assistance from the most unlikeliest of sources, 24 year-old Lisbeth Salander, a tattooed, troubled yet brilliant researcher whose investigative abilities, surprisingly, rival his own. Lisbeth operates by her own set of rules and proves to be quite a professional and emotional challenge to Mikael.

Sadly, Stieg Larsson passed away in 2004. Three of the Larsson manuscripts were delivered before his death. The second in the series is The Girl Who Played With Fire, and the third is "The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest"  and  is scheduled to be published in October 2009.

Take your time with this book. It is slow to warm up but I encourage you to give it a chance.  I hope you enjoy the twists and turns that this story takes you on.....I am looking forward to reading the second book....Now available at your local library and bookstores.
