The Cipriani family has announced that it will close New York City's legendary Rainbow Room on January 12th.
The restaurant opened for business during the Great Depression on October 3, 1934, and set a standard for elegance and opulence. Of late the restaurant has primarily served tourists in search of quintessential New York nostalgia. While native New Yorkers rarely frequent the iconic spot, its demise surely signifies the end of an era.
As for the future of the space, the Associated Press tells us, "Its bar, banquet space and the weekend dinner-dancing sessions that reflect its glamorous history will continue on the 65th floor."
