Saying, "We are grateful for your business," sounds so simple. Can saying those words have any impact on your business's success? Absolutely.

Yesterday, my husband and I were shopping for some plants at English Gardens. We have always been pleased with the plant selection and the service. Let me say that they are NOT the cheapest place to get plants. But, when you need to know if the plant is going to do well in your garden, they are the place to go. There are always associates around to help you choose the right plant. In fact, we were looking for some water plants for our shade garden. The young man who we asked didn't know the answer. He immediately went for help. But, he did something I rarely see in retail, he stayed and listened to the advice we were given. He said " I want to learn about these plants." That was very impressive. He, like all the staff, were there as consultants, not sales people, and he wanted to continually improve.

As impressive as that was, what really got my attention was the consultant who help us with ties for our plants. After he walked us over the ties, explained the pros and cons, and asked if he could help us with anything else, he said "Thanks, we are grateful for your business." It stopped me in my tracks. He REALLY meant it.

Gratitude has a number of benefits. First of all, it is good for the customer to hear. With money being tight we love to know that our patronage is appreciated. But, it is even better for the person who says it. Gratitude feeds the person who is grateful. When you say "We appreciate your business" it keeps you from taking your customers for granted. When customers are taken for granted it is much easier to slip into bad customer service habits.

Try it today. Tell your clients you appreciate their business, or send them a note. Let them know that you get it, that you understand that you wouldn't have a business without your customers.

By the way, thank your for reading this. I am grateful to you.
