“Deluxe-packaging ain’t noise-pollution”
The music industry’s recent attempt at reinvigorating physical sales has inspired some amazingly creative ideas for deluxe packaging that leaves the listener benefitting each and every time. VIP Passes, signed lithographs, sketchbooks and even “golden ticket”-like 7”s have all been gracing packages from bands like Metric, The Beastie Boys and Beck .
However, classic rock, as it usually does, may have come back and completely outdone everyone. AC/DC’s newest box set will package rarities, B-sides, live tracks and best-of memorabilia inside of a functional, 1-watt guitar amp. That’s right . . . dress up in your schoolboy outfit, plug-in and give us your best Angus impression through your new AC/DC shrine.
AC/DC Backtracks includes three CDs, two DVDs, one vinyl LP, and a 16-page hard-cover booklet that reaches throughout the rock n roll machine’s history. Stashed in the very back of the guitar amp is a memorabilia pack that includes a guitar pick, temporary tattoo, posters, stickers, buttons, lithographs and even a fake $100 bill from 1991’s Money Talks tour.
This box set absolutely blows away any other attempt that I’ve seen from bands releasing deluxe-packaging sets. The AC/DC camp has been an innovative one in recent years as it tries to battle illegal-downloaders and even digital-music distributors like iTunes, who they blame for “killing the album”.
The set comes in at a superfan price of $200 and is available at the backtracks website immediately. Included on the website are videos of Angus playing a few licks from “Shook Me All Night Long” and “Back In Black”.
AC/DC has just raised the bar in user-fitted content by playing to those who actually worship their music. The ante has invariably been raised on deluxe-packaging and, amazingly, the veteran aussie band is back at the top of the music-marketing game.
Go ahead and give the beast it’s credit . . . plug-in and rip through “Givin’ The Dog A Bone” once over.
