You can see it at Newark Airport, on the New Jersey Turnpike, on a NJ Transit train going into Manhattan, or at the Short Hills Mall. Just about everyone of us has at least one gadget on our person, and we're more than likely in the process of communicating with at least one, if not many other, person(s).
Whether it's an iPhone, a BlackBerry, an MSI Wind netbook, or a Kindle, we are either viewing a communication or, even more fascinating, creating a communication for others. When was the last time that you did NOT read someone else's blog/Facebook/RSS feed, or post your own content?
The explosive growth of what I like to refer to as "personal media products" like the ones I've listed above, has given us the power to become our own media companies. Why should we rely on the "established media" when we can tell the story ourselves? We HAVE the technology--smartphones that allow us to take pictures/record video and upload it to YouTube or our own vlogs (videoblogs), netbooks weighing between 2 to 3 pounds that we can take anywhere, and so on.
Want to know why newspapers like the Rocky Mountain News have shut down and others like the Newark Star-Ledger are struggling? It's not just because businesses and individuals are finding cheaper ways to advertise (like craigslist), but the other 800-pound gorilla in the room is because advanced technology is affordable. Despite our struggling economy, netbooks and smartphones are flying off the shelves and, more importantly, we are using these gadgets to create communication.
We live in interesting times...
